Water Reclamation for an Ice-Cream Factory & Meat Processing Plant

A local food company decided to enter into the realm of manufacturing ice cream and processing meat on a large scale. They turned to Ecohesion to advise on both potable water supply and purification as well as wastewater treatment and reuse water reclamation.

Site: Ice-Cream factory and Meat processing factory, Barbados

Challenge: Strict international and local requirements for the disposal of wastewater  from food manufacturers.

Solution: A value-engineered containerized water treatment facility maintained and operated by the  Ecohesion team; ensuring the effluent quality criteria of local and international  bodies are met.

Capacity: 10,000 US GPD

Technology: Membrane Bioreator (MBR)

Service: Design, Build, Operate & Maintain

Built in 2021, the water reclamation facility processes water from both an ice-cream plant and a meat processing facility. The waste is high in fats, oil, and grease as well as COD and TSS. An advanced hybrid system was designed to treat this wasted water to a reusable quality for the nearby farmland.

The water is firstly screened down to 2mm then it enters a buffering and mixing tank before being sent through a dissolved air flotation (DAF) plant to separate grease and oil. The effluent water then enters the MBR process which generates high quality reuse water meeting local and international standards. The biological sludge is dewatered along with the sludge from the DAF by an advanced sludge press. Operation and maintenance of the fully automated and most advanced treatment system on island is provided by Ecohesion allowing the client to focus on making delicious products.
