Water Treatment for a Beverage Bottling Company
The beverage industry utilizes as much as 11L of water to make 1L of product, making water treatment in the industry key to environmental protection. A global bottling company took the reigns as one of the first manufacturers in Barbados to bring environmental stewardship to an international gold standard level.
Site: Beverage Manufacturing & Bottling Company, Barbados
Challenge: Strict international and local requirements for the disposal of wastewater from beverage manufacturers.
Solution: A value-engineered water treatment facility maintained and operated by the Ecohesion team; ensuring the effluent quality criteria of local and international bodies are met.
Capacity: 10,000 US GPD
Technology: Membrane Bioreactor (MBR)
Service: Design, Build, Operate & Maintain
Built in 2010, the water treatment facility processes water from their bottling operations including the acidic and alkaline cleaning solutions used to sterilize equipment. The 48-hour hydraulic retention time of the equalization tank was specifically designed to mix and disperse high COD loads as well as varying pH from these chemical events. The automated plant was also designed with a modem and auto-dialer which signals Ecohesion technicians, in the event of alarms. Our around the clock team then have the option to visit the plant or dial into the plant remotely and troubleshoot any issues that arose. The full support package offered by Ecohesion also includes quarterly and monthly inspections, biological process testing, preventative and corrective maintenance, sludge handling, chemical cleans and supply, monthly reporting, and testing for the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of Barbados. Adhering to strict international food safety standards and local environmental protection requirements ensure the permeate is suitable for both its non-potable application of irrigation and wash downs as well as overflow discharge to water bodies.
The successful operation of this wastewater plant since Ecohesion’s inception has led to winning contracts to also support and operate beverage bottling plants in Grenada and Trinidad.
